MetroConnect |
eThekwini Metro©onnect is a Fibre Optic service on the eThekwini Municipality Network that provides transparent, symmetrical, un-contended bandwidth between two Ethernet ports in a point-to-point, point-to-multipoint, or multipoint-to-multipoint configuration.
Although the network has been designed to support a variety of circuit types and resulting logical topologies, in the initial release of Metro©onnect the primary ethernet service will be a logical point-to-point circuit between two network endpoints/interfaces. This first release of Metro©onnect is designed primarily to support connectivity between Internet Service Providers and their customers, as well as between the Internet Service Provider’s own networking equipment.
Metro©onnect ethernet services are engineered for a targeted end-to-end availability of 99.93%, a maximum one-way latency of <10ms and maximum jitter of <3ms. The eThekwini Municipality network upon which the Metro©onnect services are based, has been engineered to meet the availability and service targets defined by using fault-tolerant, automatic rerouting in the event of link failure. Currently, geographic availability is limited to the eThekwini municipal region.

Key Features |
Some of the key features of eThekwini Metro©onnect are as follows:
- Competitive lead times
- Competitive “wholesale” pricing
- Transparent (to the Customer)
- Secure transmission (Virtual Private Network technology)
- Bandwidth-rich (512Kbps up to 10Gbps)
 |
Data Rates (Bandwidth) |
All customers provisioned on the Metro©onnect network have a bandwidth profile which dictates the maximum throughput (in bits-per-second). The Metro©onnect Carrier Ethernet network supports provisioning of customers with data rates that conform to the following specifications:
- A minimum of 512 Kbit/s (Kilobits per-second)
- A maximum of 1 Gbit/s (Gigabits per-second)
- Any increment of 1Mbps, between 1 and 1000Mbps
