How to Choose the Right Website Design Company

Choosing a Web Designer

What you should know about choosing a website design company to ensure that your website will be as good as it can be.

Choosing a company or specialist to design your new website can be a difficult task to get right. In this article, I will discuss some of the important factors when considering this important decision.

Look at Previous Designs

Most web designers or design companies will have a portfolio of websites that they have worked on and these are usually available on their website. Take a moment to browse through these looking for diversity and quality. The number of sites they have worked on is also a good indicator of longevity in the industry.

How Stable and Reliable is the Company?

You want a web professional that will see the job to the end and not leave you with a half finished website. I have seen a number of clients come to me requesting that we take over their website because the designer is no longer with the company or has gone into another line of business.

Also, always ensure that your domain name is registered directly in your companies name and that the website hosting agreement is with your company. Trying to takeover these accounts from a designer who has moved on can be near impossible.

What is the Company's Reputation?

Look for testimonials from existing clients on their website, and if they don’t have  testimonials on their website ask them to refer you to customers that will be willing to talk about their experience with the designers. Google their company name and look for customer complaints.

Do they care about your brand?

A good designer will ask you about your existing website if you have one and what your vision for your new website is. They will display a keen interest in your brand and what you want to achieve with your website.

Do they know about SEO?

SEO (Search Engine Optimisation) has become a vital part of the website creation process, and your web designer or company must have a solid working knowledge of SEO and how to boost your search engine exposure. This is not the same as Google Addwords or a marketing campaign, as this should be left to a company that specialises in online marketing and can make your web presence really top.

Never trust a specialist that guarantees you a high ranking in Google, as these page  ranks are organic in nature and beyond the control of any individual. A good SEO specialist may tell you that they might be able to get you on the first page with a lot of hard work, but will never make guarantees or promises.

Is the Price Fair?

Prices will vary depending on geographical region and based on the scope of the project. If the price seem too good to be true, then take extra care to ensure that scope of work entails everything you need, and that the designer has a good track record. If the price seems to expensive, let them know and get prices from other designers.

You may wish to add custom modules or new technologies to your website as it grows. Ensure that your prospective designer has the diversity of skills to support this growth for your website.

Flash Web Sites

Never accept a proposal for a website designed completely in flash, most visitors to websites don’t like Flash enabled sites and they tend to take a longer time to load. If you ever need another designer to take over updating your flash website it will cost you a small fortune as this can be a highly complex process. This will also require that your new designer has access to the un-compiled Flash documents or they will not be able to update you website at all.

Flash does not work on all browsers, especially mobile phone browsers and will not work on the Apple iPad.

If you must have flash on your website, go for something small like a Flash banner or Flash splash page, but ensure that these are kept to the smallest possible file size and include a pre-loader if necessary.

Content Managment Systems

In order to have an effective web presence, you will need to update your content regularly. This can become very costly if you have to pay your website designer every time you need to do this.  Content Management Systems (CMS) allow you to update the content in your website from a browser with no special software or advanced skills required.  Make certain the designer quotes you on a content managed website and includes training on the CMS in the quote.
